AIN’T GOTTA LYE TO KICK IT
Following the “Red, White and The Blues” series, “Ain't Gotta Lye To Kick It” borrows from personal memory and shared experiences with microaggressions against women of color, misogyny and the struggle of assimilating in white patriarchal spaces. The quotes featured in "He Said" mark specific conversations with her ex-boyfriend and a Political Science professor in college when she reverted to her natural hair in 2004. Also seen are teeth from broken combs and coils of hair shed from improper maintenance early on in her natural hair phase.
In a few words, "She Said" gets bold and straight up with the new attitude toward these opinions made by others upon herself. In contrast to the former, the composition is simple to infer the message plainly that other’s disdain is not her burden to bear. It’s more important to hold true to yourself and steadfast in the natural hair journey -‐ all the key ingredients found in several recipes she learned from the book of Black Girl Magic.
